1. Tape Measure
2. 3pc Cordless Tool Kit (Drills and Circular Saw)
3. Pocket Hole Jig
4. Random Orbital Sander
5. Carpenter’s Square
6. Jigsaw
7. Squeeze Clamps
8. Bar or Pipe Clamps
9. Miter Saw
9 Tape Measure
A reliable tape measure is invaluable due to its frequent usage. There’s nothing more aggravating than a tape measure that snaps back due to its age or fragility. I prefer 16-foot tape measures, as 25-foot versions can be unwieldy and cumbersome.
The first option is more compact, making it suitable for everyday use due to its slimmer design.
The second option is more substantial. With a wider and more robust blade, it’s less prone to kinking. Both options are functional, depending on your preference.
8 Three-Piece Cordless Tool Set
For DIY construction projects, you will find drills and circular saws indispensable. The most economical approach is purchasing a three-tool cordless set. A circular saw is essential for cutting timber and plywood without a table saw. Additionally, investing in a Kreg Accu-Cut is advisable as it effectively turns your circular saw into a track saw, allowing for more precise cuts.
7 Pocket Hole Jig
Joining wood pieces is a fundamental aspect of woodworking. Pocket holes are one of the most straightforward and teachable methods for this. Pocket hole jigs vary in complexity. For beginners, the Kreg R3 is recommended for its affordability and ease of use for various woodworking projects.
The Kreg K5 is an upgraded version, featuring an auto-adjusting clamp that facilitates rapid pocket hole drilling.
6 Random Orbital Sander
Once you’ve experienced manual sanding, you’ll appreciate the efficiency of a random orbital sander. It’s almost indispensable for any woodworking project due to the speed and ease it brings to the sanding process.
5 Carpenter’s Square
A carpenter’s square allows you to quickly identify 90 degrees when cutting wood to length with a circular saw. It’s an invaluable and cost-effective tool for any woodshop.
4 Jigsaw
A jigsaw is crucial for cutting intricate designs like curves or circles in wood. It’s also versatile for sizing down larger pieces of material.
3 Squeeze Clamps
In carpentry, it’s often said that one cannot have too many clamps. For smaller projects, 12-inch squeeze clamps are my favorite due to their affordability and effectiveness.
2 Bar or Pipe Clamps
For larger woodworking projects requiring more force, I use bar or pipe clamps. While bar clamps are preferred, pipe clamps offer a cost-effective solution. It’s important to note that the jaws for pipe clamps are typically sold separately.
1 Miter Saw
The miter saw is the most expensive tool listed, but its precision and speed in making 90- and 45-degree cuts in wood make it a worthwhile investment. It’s one of the most essential tools in my workshop for crafting a wide variety of projects.
